X-ray Emission from Nearby M-dwarfs: the Super-saturation Phenomenon

چکیده
A rotation rate and X-ray luminosity analysis is presented for rapidly rotating single and binary M-dwarf systems. X-ray luminosities for the majority of both single & binary M-dwarf systems with periods below ≃ 5−6 days (equatorial velocities, Veq∼>6 km s) are consistent with the current rotation-activity paradigm, and appear to saturate at about 10 of the stellar bolometric luminosity. The single M-dwarf data show tentative evidence for the super-saturation phenomenon observed in some ultra-fast rotating (∼>100 km s ) G & K-dwarfs in the IC 2391, IC 2602 and Alpha Persei clusters. The IC 2391 M star VXR60b is the least X-ray active and most rapidly rotating of the short period (Prot∼<2 days) stars considered herein, with a period of 0.212 days and an X-ray activity level about 1.5 sigma below the mean X-ray emission level for most of the single M-dwarf sample. For this star, and possibly one other, we cautiously believe that we have identified the first evidence of super-saturation in M-dwarfs. If we are wrong, we demonstrate that only M-dwarfs rotating close to their break up velocities are likely to exhibit the super-saturation effect at X-ray wavelengths. The M-dwarf X-ray data also show that there is no evidence for any difference in the X-ray behaviour between the single and binary systems, because for the single stars, the mean log Lx/Lbol = −3.21 ± 0.04 (0.2∼<Prot∼<10.1 days), whereas for the binary stars, the mean log Lx/Lbol = −3.19± 0.10 (0.8∼<Prot∼<10.4 days). Furthermore, we show that extremely X-ray active M-dwarfs exhibit a blue excess of about 0.1 magnitudes in U−B compared to less active field M-dwarfs. Such an excess level is comparable to that observed for extremely chromospherically active M-dwarfs. Moreover, as is the case for M-dwarf Ca II H & K activity levels, there is an exclusion zone of X-ray activity between the extremely active M-dwarfs and the less active ones.

As part of our on-going investigation into the magnetic field properties of ultracool dwarfs, we present simultaneous radio, X-ray, and Hα observations of three M9.5-L2.5 dwarfs (BRI 0021-0214, LSR 060230.4+391059, and 2MASS J052338.2−140302). We do not detect X-ray or radio emission from any of the three sources, despite previous detections of radio emission from BRI 0021 and 2M0523−14. Steady...
متن کاملSpitzer-IRAC Search for Companions to Nearby, Young M Dwarfs
We present the results of a survey of nearby, young M stars for wide low-mass companions with IRAC on the Spitzer Space Telescope. We observed 40 young M dwarfs within 20 pc of the Sun, selected through X-ray emission criteria. A total of 10 candidate companions were found with IRAC colors consistent with T dwarfs. Extensive ground-based NIR follow-up observations rejected all these candidates....

Aims. We report the X-ray properties of young (∼3 Myr) bona fide brown dwarfs of the Taurus Molecular Cloud (TMC). Methods. The XMM-Newton Extended Survey of the TMC (XEST) is a large program designed to systematically investigate the X-ray properties of young stellar/substellar objects in the TMC. In particular, the area surveyed by 15 XMM-Newton pointings (of which three are archival observat...
متن کاملPopulation X: Are the super-Eddington X-ray sources beamed jets in microblazars or intermediate mass black holes?
Recent X-ray observations reveal an increasing number of X-ray sources in nearby galaxies exceeding luminosities of Lx >∼ 2 · 10 erg s. Assuming isotropic emission, the Eddington limit suggests a population of intermediate-mass black holes of M• ≫ 10M⊙. However, Markoff, Falcke, & Fender (2001) proposed that jets may be contributing to the X-ray emission from X-ray binaries (XRBs), implying tha...
متن کاملInvestigating coronal saturation and supersaturation in fast-rotating M-dwarf stars
At fast rotation rates, the coronal activity of Gand K-type stars has been observed to ‘saturate’ and then decline again at even faster rotation rates – a phenomenon dubbed ‘supersaturation’. In this paper, we investigate coronal activity in fast-rotating M-dwarfs using deep XMM–Newton observations of 97 low-mass stars of known rotation period in the young open cluster NGC 2547 and combine thes...
